The NWT Power Corporation says it has shut down the hydro plant that powers the South Slave for around three weeks of work.

With the Taltson hydro plant back out of service, Hay River, Kátł’odeeche First Nation, Enterprise, Fort Smith and Fort Resolution will be powered by diesel for the time being.

Taltson only came back online at the end of March after almost two years out of action. The power corporation had spent that time overhauling the nearly 60-year-old hydro plant, work that overran by just under 18 months.

When Taltson returned to service, NTPC had said it would need some time this summer to install a “permanent solution” to technical issues that had been part of the delay.

On Monday evening, NTPC said the first two weeks of the three-week shutdown will be “focused on mechanical work that remains to complete the Taltson overhaul project.”
