Ecology North is throwing a Moth Ball, an event where Yellowknifers can learn about moths and other creatures that come out at night.

The Moth Ball will be held at the Fred Henne Territorial Park’s day use area from 7-9pm on Wednesday, August 13.

It’s free, all ages can attend, and organizers say it will feature lots of activities related to moths and other insects.

Those include microscope demonstrations, an art station and night creature bingo (with prizes), as well as moth sheeting, a technique used to attract and observe moths and other flying insects.

“Moths and other animals that come out at night are generally overlooked,” said the event’s coordinator, Sean Crowe.

“I thought it would be great to have a chance to slow down and look closer at the animals that come out after night and celebrate what we don’t usually get to see.”

Crowe encourages everyone, “whether you’re a biologist or someone who’s never looked at a moth up close before,” to bring a friend and a curious mind for the evening.

Organizers say parking at the day-use area is limited, but extra parking will be available at the main beach parking lot across the highway from the airport. The event will go on rain or shine, so be sure to dress for the occasion.

“This free event is a great way to learn, connect, and unwind under the night sky,” Ecology North stated in a press release.
