Highway 3 has reopened after an incident midway between Fort Providence and Behchokǫ̀ blocked the road for much of Tuesday morning, the NWT’s Department of Infrastructure says.
According to the department’s Drive NWT website, the road – which had been closed at km 156, about a third of the way south from Behchokǫ̀ toward Fort Providence – reopened just before 10am.
A photo taken at the scene shows a tractor trailer strewn across the road in smoky conditions. Wildfires have been burning along that stretch of the highway for weeks.
One resident who was travelling on the highway early on Tuesday said they had encountered such smoky conditions shortly before 5am that they had to pull over and wait for the smoke to clear.
When visibility eventually improved, at around 7am, the resident said they passed the stranded tractor trailer.
The Department of Infrastructure confirmed the road had been closed because of a transport truck blocking the route.
