Ice cream lovers, rejoice. Yellowknife’s Sundog Trading Post is set to reopen.

The café on Latham Island, which makes its own ice cream among other food, has been closed since a fire damaged the building on June 27.

The City of Yellowknife said the fire was caused by improper handling of a butane torch.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, the business announced it would reopen on Thursday and offer daily hours of 10am-7pm through Sunday this week.

Owner Richard McIntosh told Cabin Radio Sundog currently has no kitchen but will sell coffee and scooped ice cream on Thursday, as well as baked goods from Kamp Coffee, a café in the city’s Kam Lake district.

“Our kitchen was not completely destroyed by the fire, but enough to that there has to be a rebuild to our kitchen,” he said.

“We’re still a few months away from having our own kitchen again.”

McIntosh said while work on the café’s kitchen is under way, the business hopes to use another commercial kitchen in the city to make food.

He said when that happens, the café will offer a reduced menu of baked goods, some soups and possibly salads.

McIntosh said his takeaway from the experience is to make sure that all individuals and business owners are “well aware of their insurance coverage.”
