The Northwest Territories is helping with firefighting efforts in Nova Scotia.
NWT Fire wildfire information officer Thomas Bentham said the territory recently sent four 802 Fire Boss air tankers and pilots to the province.
They are helping to fight the out-of-control West Dalhousie wildfire burning in the province’s Annapolis County. According to the Nova Scotia government, the fire is estimated to be 3,210 hectares.
Some residents have been ordered to evacuate from the area as firefighters work to protect homes.
Bentham said the territory is further assembling 20 firefighters from across the NWT to assist elsewhere in Canada. He said their destination will be determined in the next few days by the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, which manages the spread of wildland firefighting resources across Canada.
“It’s all about availability. We’re also all in this together,” Bentham said of sending firefighters and other resources outside the NWT.
“For 30 years we’ve been sharing resources across the country. Even lately, we had folks from Newfoundland, [Yukon] and Alberta come up for the Tulip Lake fire to help out.”
Bentham added the NWT sends help internationally when called upon.
Thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes in Newfoundland and Labrador and the Canadian Armed Forces have been deployed to the province to help fight wildfires.
The federal government also recently approved resources to help with wildfire suppression efforts in Nova Scotia.
