The City of Yellowknife says Pilots’ Monument, an Old Town landmark, has reopened after recent damage to its ramp and steps.

Pilots’ Monument, at the top of a hill in Yellowknife’s Old Town, honours the legacy of northern bush pilots.

It’s also a tourist hotspot with views looking out across Yellowknife Bay and back toward downtown.

A truck hit the staircase up to the monument on Saturday, August 23. The area was cordoned off while repairs took place.

Even so, some enterprising visitors simply found other ways to clamber up the rocky hill.

As of Friday, the city says access via the ramp and steps has been restored.

“The Pilot’s Monument has now reopened, and residents and visitors are welcome to access this valued community landmark once again,” City Hall stated in a brief Friday afternoon update.
