Natan Obed will remain president of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami after defeating challenger Kevin Kablutsiak at ITK’s annual general meeting in Cambridge Bay.

Obed, who was first elected ITK president in 2015, is now set to remain in the role until at least 2029.

ITK is the national advocacy organization for Inuit.

Votes in an ITK presidential election are cast by delegates representing the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, Makivvik and the Nunatsiavut Government, as well as by two delegates designated by each Inuit Treaty Organization and by the ITK vice-president.

The precise result of Thursday’s vote were not given in an evening ITK news release.

Obed, from Nain, was sworn in for his new term as the 2025 annual general meeting closed.

Kablutsiak had been looking to take over as president after serving as managing editor of CBC North. He previously worked for ITK, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc, Canadian North and the Arctic Inspiration Prize.
