The City of Yellowknife says it is looking into the circumstances behind a video circulating online that appeared to show someone being shoved to the ground by a library security guard.

When viewed by Cabin Radio on Tuesday, the footage appeared to show the guard pushing the person and then pulling out what looked like a retractable baton.

By Wednesday, the video had been deleted from at least one social media channel.

In a statement, the City of Yellowknife confirmed an incident had occurred at the library on Tuesday “involving our contracted security provider and a member of the public,” and that the video showed part of what took place.

The broader context of what was shown in the short video clip, if any, was not immediately clear. The city did not provide its own description of the video’s contents or any further detail.

“The city takes all such incidents seriously. Our contracted security firm has initiated an internal review of this incident,” City Hall stated.

“The safety and well-being of library staff, security personnel and all Yellowknifers is our top priority.

“We are aware that this incident has generated discussion on social media, and ask all residents to be respectful in online discussions. We will provide further information once the review has been completed.”
