Toni Heron has been elected to a new term as Salt River First Nation’s chief according to the One Feather digital voting platform.
Heron received 185 votes according to preliminary results, securing another term having been previously elected in 2022.
Challenger Frieda Martselos, the former MLA for the Thebacha region and a past chief, received 136 votes.
One Feather – a company that helps Indigenous nations manage elections – also published a list of votes for council positions.
By 145 votes to 72, voters also backed a new membership law in a referendum.
Heron was suspended by the band council for some of her previous term, a suspension that a federal judge later declared procedurally unfair and unreasonable.
She ran her latest campaign on a platform of “continuing to move forward,” focusing in particular on education funding and opportunities.
