Yellowknife Airport’s washrooms are getting an upgrade

If you thought the Arctic Corridor was a multi-billion-dollar piece of infrastructure that hasn’t been built yet, think again. It already exists.

It turns out that’s the name for the hallway next to the toilets at Yellowknife Airport.

If you’re attached to the Arctic Corridor, bad news – it’s probably going to make way for a nicer place to poop.

In a request for proposals that closes this week, the territorial government seeks a contractor to give travellers some relief.

“The Yellowknife Airport main passenger washrooms are at the end of their life cycle,” the GNWT states in the document.

“The washroom conditions have deteriorated and are not adequate to accommodating individuals with diverse physical needs such as wheelchairs, elderly passengers, and those with other mobility impairments.”

The washrooms will undergo a “comprehensive redesign,” after which they are expected to comply with the latest National Building Code requirements, improve accessibility and better use space – meaning, the document suggests, getting rid of the Arctic Corridor and expanding the washrooms.

There will be a new janitorial room and “pet relief area” if the request for proposals becomes a reality.

Contractors will be asked to submit two concepts: one with gender-assigned washrooms and one with a single set of stalls that all travellers can use.

“Walls separating each booth must also have reasonable acoustic barrier,” the request for proposals declares, happily.

The GNWT doesn’t identify a budget for the project. The timeline for the initial design work suggests a construction tender should go out in the spring of 2026. When the finished product will open isn’t clear.
