Amnesty International’s Yellowknife group will promote the charity’s Write for Rights letter-writing campaign at the city’s Javaroma café on Saturday.
From 10am-2pm, the group will help residents sign petitions and produce letters targeting four cases.
Among them is a campaign to support Norway’s Indigenous Sámi people, described by Amnesty as “fighting to protect their territory, way of life and culture.”
Other campaigns include a call to release a photojournalist jailed in Myanmar, a call for justice on behalf of a three-year-old who died at a South African pre-school after falling into a pit toilet, and support for people in Ecuador “demanding enforcement of laws to protect the climate and eliminate gas flaring.”
“Letters from Yellowknifers have contributed to the restoration of human rights and abusers being brought to justice,” Amnesty’s Yellowknife group stated in a press release, citing examples like the successful effort to secure the release of a prisoner in Kyrgyzstan last year.
