A “carefully planned” intentional fire was set north of Wrigley on Tuesday afternoon in a bid to protect the Dehcho community from a wildfire five kilometres away.
By the evening, NWT Fire said that “ignition operation” was ongoing.
Wrigley has been evacuated since the end of June and even some essential personnel have now left, after fire FS015 moved seven kilometres closer to the community in recent days.
Temperatures on Tuesday hit 31C with southerly gusting winds and low humidity.
Unsettled conditions are expected on Wednesday with showers, storms and “highly variable” winds that could create rapidly changing fire behaviour, the territory’s wildfire agency said.
Cooler, wetter weather is expected later in the week.
