Yellowknife’s annual Christmas bird count takes place on Saturday, with Ecology North inviting residents to help spot and tally winter birds across the city.

The count begins at 8:30am at the Ecology North office, 5016 50 Avenue. Participants will be assigned neighbourhoods and can join for all or part of the day.

The free, all-ages event is led by Reid Hildebrandt, an experienced birder who organizes Yellowknife’s annual count. Beginners are welcome.

Last year marked the 40th anniversary of Yellowknife’s participation in the continent-wide count, which contributes data that conservation biologists use to track bird populations.

Participants are asked to bring binoculars and dress warmly.
