Territorial agency Housing NWT says it is handing responsibility for Inuvik’s homeless shelter to an advisory board in early January 2026.

Housing NWT took over operations at the shelter on an interim basis in the summer of 2021 but could not initially find anyone else interested in the job.

In a news release, the agency said transferring the shelter to the new board “reflects a long-standing community goal to have homelessness services guided by local voices, while ensuring shelter services continue without disruption for those who rely on them.”

The changeover will take place on January 5, 2026.

Board chair Peggy Day said the group was “pleased to accept this responsibility and will continue to strive to support our homeless population.”

The GNWT said it had increased shelter funding to help attract a local operator.

A request for proposals will also be issued for a second, separate Inuvik facility known as the warming shelter.
