YWCA NWT says it will hold events throughout 2026 to celebrate its 60th anniversary.

The non-profit, founded in 1966 to provide housing for single working women, now provides a variety of supports like housing, safe shelter, youth, family and childcare services.

In a Tuesday news release, YWCA said its 80-plus staff members positively impact the lives of more than 4,000 residents across the territory annually.

YWCA plans to launch a fundraising campaign aimed at supporting the organization’s youth empowerment programs, GirlSpace and Dudes Club.

Earlier this month, YWCA unveiled a five-year strategic plan outlining its priorities for growth and reinforcing its commitment to fostering equitable and inclusive northern communities “where women, girls and families feel safe, respected and empowered.”

“The world and the North have changed a lot in the past 60 years and so have we,” YWCA executive director Hawa Dumbuya-Sesay was quoted as saying.

“I’m proud of our ability to adapt to the needs of families and a major reason we’re still here and continue to grow is how we’ve been able to evolve to meet the needs of those who need us most.

“It’s humbling to hear from people how much the YWCA means to them and how their lives have changed because of our programs and our staff. It’s something we don’t take lightly, and we are committed to making sure we have the same positive impact on families’ lives for decades to come.”

Dumbuya-Sesay called the anniversary a moment of reflection.

She said the organization will continue to listen closely, adapt to evolving needs and advocate for equity and opportunity across the communities it serves.

“The YWCA’s legacy is built on partnership and progress, and together, we will continue to create lasting change for the next 60 years and beyond,” she added.
