An Edmonton 30-year-old is in custody after Monday’s major police operation on Hay River’s Pine Crescent, which RCMP said was related to the drug trade.

RCMP said their operation began after receiving a call at about 2pm reporting someone pointing a gun at someone else inside a home on the street.

“The victim, who was also reportedly assaulted by the suspect, was able to escape the residence unharmed, however the suspect and several other people remained inside,” police stated.

Eight people were arrested, RCMP said, and seven were later released without charge.

Malik Shaw, 30, of Edmonton, faces multiple charges related to illegal gun use, assault with a weapon, assault while chocking, and four counts related to trafficking or possessing property obtained by crime.

Shaw has been remanded into custody, police said.

RCMP said officers found a replica pistol, some suspected crack cocaine and fentanyl, about $2,600 in cash and more than $2,000 in “luxury items” inside the home.

An investigation is ongoing.
