A fire at a home on Yellowknife’s southeastern edge appears to be arson, police say.

Residents reported a fire in the early hours of Tuesday on Robertson Drive, which runs along the border between Yellowknife and the Con Mine property near Great Slave Lake.

RCMP told Cabin Radio that officers arriving shortly after 2:30am “found a residence fully engulfed” and firefighters at the scene.

“The fire department was able to extinguish the fire and officers remained on scene to investigate. It was determined that no occupants remained inside the house and no injuries were reported,” police stated.

“The matter was determined to be suspicious in nature and the investigation remains open at this time, with assistance from the Office of the Fire Marshal.”

Robertson Drive is sparsely populated by Yellowknife standards. The area in question features a handful of trailers at the edge of a large industrial lot that backs onto the former Con gold mine.

Even so, police appealed for anyone in the area with home security cameras to check their footage for suspicious activity between midnight and 2:30am on Tuesday, and contact the Yellowknife detachment at 867-669-1111 if they see anything of note.
