Community governments in the Northwest Territories can now apply for a total of more than $74 million through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund.
The funding – part of a 10-year agreement between the federal and territorial governments finalized in March 2025 – supports water, wastewater and solid waste projects.
The idea is that by upgrading those forms of infrastructure, communities are also laying the groundwork for more homes to be built.
Eligible projects are those that plan, build or upgrade infrastructure for drinking water, wastewater, stormwater and solid waste.
Projects must be listed in a community’s current capital plan, cost at least $1 million, directly support housing development, be ready to proceed, and be “substantially completed” by September 2031.
Applications for projects expected to start in 2026 must be submitted by February 28, while applications for projects starting in 2027 or later must be in by June 30 this year.
Only expenses incurred after project approval will be reimbursed, the news release stated.
Before applying, the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs asks that community governments review the program guide.
