Google is rolling out new Street View imagery for parts of Yellowknife, nearly two decades after the last update.

The last time a Street View car sauntered through the territorial capital, Barack Obama had just become US president, Vancouver 2010 hadn’t happened and Instagram hadn’t been invented.

On Tuesday, the Yellowknife of 2009 started giving way to the 2020s version of the city. Residents checking Google’s map of the city began to see new shots dated October 2025.

Initially, only a small portion of the city appeared to have updated.

Dropping a Street View pin in the vicinity of Woolgar Avenue, Bromley Drive and Byrne Road gave some users immediate access to the 2025 imagery. Others were shown 2009’s photos but could select “see more dates” to reach the 2025 equivalent.

By Tuesday evening, other areas like the city’s downtown also offered the option of 2025 imagery.

Google has ignored requests for comment.

The updated images were first reported by users of Virtual Streets, a forum for devotees of Street View.

Until now, entire schools, businesses and other major developments were missing from Yellowknife’s Street View.

Instead of the new aquatic centre opened in 2025, for example, Street View users were presented with a mini putt that still existed in 2009 but closed not long after.
