Environment Canada issued an orange air quality warning for Yellowknife on Monday.

Orange is both the second most severe tier in the federal colour-coded warning system and a semi-accurate description of how the air looks.

“Wildfire smoke is causing poor air quality and reduced visibility at times. Conditions are expected to improve on Tuesday,” Environment Canada stated in a Monday morning advisory.

The City of Yellowknife directed residents to its fieldhouse track and playground, indoor facilities that are open for free and act as somewhere to exercise with improved air quality in this kind of situation.

“Those seeking relief from the smoke may also visit the Yellowknife Public Library or the Yellowknife Visitor Centre during regular hours,” the city stated.

There are no wildfires burning near Yellowknife.

Smoke modelling services suggested Monday’s smoke was primarily coming from fire ZF015, burning northwest of Wekweètì and being carried south by the wind.
