Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected in Yellowknife on Thursday to “announce a new plan to defend and transform Canada’s Northern and Arctic region,” his office says.

In a Wednesday advisory, Carney’s office said he will hold a 2:30pm news conference then meet with NWT Premier RJ Simpson.

The detail of Thursday’s announcement is not clear, though officials have previously suggested it will relate to a $10-billion advance procurement notice issued by the federal government earlier this year.

That procurement notice suggested work valued at some $5 billion per community will take place in Yellowknife and Inuvik over the next 15 years, upgrading local military capabilities.

Carney – who was born in the NWT – is also expected to “visit local infrastructure” in Yellowknife on Thursday before departing for Oslo, Norway.
