Housing NWT says it has completed a “hybrid housing project” in Délı̨nę, adding two new modular duplexes to the Sahtu community’s social housing stock.
In a Monday news release, Housing NWT said the project delivered four much needed single housing units to the community while piloting a new construction approach.
“Housing remains a major priority for communities across the Sahtu, and these new homes in Délı̨nę are an important step forward,” stated Danny McNeely, the MLA for the Sahtu.
“New units like these help relieve pressure on existing housing while giving residents safe, modern homes built for northern conditions.”

Housing NWT said the pilot used prefabricated, modular cores – each with a kitchen, bathroom, mechanical room, plumbing and water tank – which were manufactured elsewhere in the NWT. Local workers and subcontractors then completed the building shell on site, the housing agency said.
Housing NWT said the hybrid approach allowed the homes to be built faster, addressing challenges related to short building seasons, weather constraints and transportation in the Sahtu.
The housing agency added the design of the homes aims to exceed energy efficiency standards and reduce fuel oil consumption.
“Remote communities like Délı̨nę need homes that work in northern conditions and can be delivered efficiently, despite the challenges of distance and climate,” stated Lucy Kuptana, the minister responsible for Housing NWT.
“I believe this modular core construction method has the potential to transform housing construction in small communities.”
