Police in Behchokǫ̀ say a 63-year-old faces charges after stealing a kayak, using a snow shovel to paddle it, then capsizing it before trying to swim to safety.
The man was not identified in a Friday RCMP news release. Police termed the incident “bizarre.”
After flipping the kayak on Marion Lake and being pulled to safety, RCMP stated, the man was arrested and charged with impaired operation of a vessel. Police said he is also charged with refusing to comply with a breath demand.
The alleged kayak theft reportedly took place on Monday. Cpl Kevin Kim of the Behchokǫ̀ detachment was quoted as saying that such incidents are “especially dangerous for both those involved and for emergency responders.”
The man has been released from custody to appear in court at a later date, RCMP added.
