A new 150-room “business class hotel” could be built next to Yellowknife’s Explorer Hotel, its owner says.

In a Thursday press release, Nunastar said it has a development permit application “progressing” with the City of Yellowknife.

“The proposed development represents a major long-term investment by Nunastar in Yellowknife and the broader northern hospitality and tourism market,” stated the company, which also owns the lower half of the city’s Centre Square Mall.

For the purposes of the application, the new five-storey hotel has been dubbed Explorer 2.0. A final name has yet to be chosen.

“The vision is to build on the amazing legacy of the Explorer Hotel by introducing an exciting new modern design vibe with a focus on creating an inviting and compelling northern experience from the moment guests see the hotel,” Nunastar wrote.

The application’s blueprints include a restaurant and lounge “with views over the city,” meeting rooms and a fitness centre.

“Nunastar is also exploring the feasibility of a rooftop deck and other distinctive guest amenities new to the territory,” the company added.

According to Nunastar, the new hotel will be “beside the Explorer.”

“The hotel is planned to be built on the bare rock that is to your right when first walking up the sidewalk to the Explorer,” Nunastar chief operating officer Ben Cox told Cabin Radio.

In Thursday’s news release, Cox said the application is “just the first step in a multi-year process, and we look forward to a great dialogue with the community and city council’s support during the upcoming development permit hearings.”
