Inuvik’s RCMP detachment has filled all 16 positions, town councillors were told this week, becoming fully staffed for the first time in years.
At a Wednesday council meeting, Inuvik detachment commander Sgt Chris Whynot said the plan is to be “extra staffed” during the summer ahead.
Whynot described having “an abundance of members, so you can see some more proactive activities going on, more court controls and check-stops – and hoping to stop crime before it happens.”
An RCMP spokesperson said that although the Inuvik detachment currently has all positions filled, staffing levels can change regularly due to routine transfers, rotations, retirements, promotions and training needs, meaning detachments are constantly adapting to shifting demands.
“With respect to when the detachment was last fully staffed, it has been several years, and a specific timeframe is not available,” RCMP said.
In the past, RCMP have said staffing is a challenge across the NWT, with vacancy rates of about 25 percent at times.
