Yellowknife RCMP say a 52-year-old man has been charged after a child was reportedly sexually assaulted at the city’s Somba K’e Park.
In a Monday afternoon news release, RCMP said an eight-year-old girl playing at the park at about 3:15pm on Saturday had been taken into nearby bushes by an unknown male suspect and sexually assaulted.
“The child was able to escape and report the incident to a parent, who contacted police. Officers attended the area immediately and located the suspect still on scene. He was arrested without incident,” RCMP stated.
Police named the man charged as Peter Mackenzie. He is charged with sexual assault, sexual interference and exposure, RCMP stated, and has been remanded into custody.
The charges have yet to be tested in court.
“The victim and suspect are not known to each other, nor have any other incidents of this nature been reported to police,” Monday’s news release added.
“While the incident is believed to be isolated, Yellowknife RCMP reminds the public to be vigilant and always maintain supervision of young children in public areas.
“Ensure children are aware of what to do when approached by strangers and immediately report suspicious behaviour to police.”
