The NWT’s Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre will receive accessibility upgrades worth $6.5 million through new federal funding, Ottawa says.

In a Monday news release, the federal government said the money would pay for “upgrades to interior ramps, lift assemblies, the auditorium, and interior stairs.”

The Yellowknife-based museum, which is the territory’s largest, has spent years searching for new income sources to pay for work on its building, which is now more than 45 years old.

“These upgrades will ensure the Centre supports inclusive participation for all and continues to play a vital role in preserving, sharing, and celebrating the history and culture of the Northwest Territories – while also enhancing tourism and local economic activity,” the news release stated.

The announcement did not specify when the work will take place.
