The 2026 summer work season at Giant Mine will involve blasting for about a month, the remediation team says, from early June until early July.
The blasting is “required for upgrades at the entrances at Giant Mine along the Ingraham Trail,” the project team stated in a notice circulated on Monday.
The work will mean delays of up to four minutes per blast for traffic on the Ingraham Trail, specifically at kilometres 4.3 – the main site access – and 6.1, the notice stated.
“The contractor will establish a blast radius zone prior to blasting. Blast radius zones are subject to change for each individual blast, but generally are between 100 and 150 metres from the detonation,” the notice continued.
“This zone must be clear of all land users for the duration of each blast, until the ‘all clear’ signal is sounded. Please observe safety signage, and pay special attention to warning signals and clearance procedures.”
Giant Mine is the toxic site of a former gold mine that is now a $4-billion federally led remediation project. The mine is on the northwestern edge of Yellowknife.
