A wildfire to the north of Wrigley is burning under extreme fire weather conditions. Wind is pushing the fire away from the community for now, NWT Fire said.
In a Sunday afternoon update, the territory’s wildfire agency urged anyone with “homes, cabins, or camps in forested areas” to take steps to Firesmart their properties.
“The community should expect to see significant fire activity today with extreme fire weather conditions. Dry conditions continue, with southeast winds expected to push the fire primarily north and west, away from the community,” NWT Fire stated.
The fire, FS015, has been growing “significantly to the north and somewhat to the west and will be highly visible from the community, but has not moved closer to town,” Sunday’s 3:30pm update added.
An incident management team has arrived from Alberta. Six air tankers and two helicopters are already working on FS015, which has grown to 4,000 hectares, with more helicopters, an ignition team and a wildland-urban interface team being deployed.
Environment Canada forecasts showers over Wrigley on Sunday night and throughout Monday, though that also comes with the risk of a thunderstorm. Rain is expected later in the week alongside a drop in temperatures.
