A wave of lightning-caused wildfires pushed the NWT beyond 70 active fires on Saturday, including new fires in the broad vicinity of Fort Good Hope and Kakisa.
Fire VQ016 is nine kilometres southwest of Fort Good Hope, NWT Fire said shortly after 5pm on Saturday.
“Aircraft and crew have been mobilized to limit the fire’s spread, and structure protection will be established around cabins and other structures as needed. There is no risk to the community at this time,” the wildfire agency stated.
Fire SS012 is 26 km west of Kakisa on the northern point of Kakisa Lake. Aircraft and crews have been assigned. “There is no risk to communities, infrastructure or cabins at this time,” NWT Fire added.
Fire SS009, reported earlier in the week near Highway 1 three kilometres north of the Alberta border, continues to be fought. In the Sahtu, the Canol Complex of fires VQ001 and VQ002 will receive firefighting reinforcements in the coming days.
In all, 10 new fires were reported on Saturday according to NWT Fire, most of them far from any communities.
