When Fort Simpson was evacuated because of a nearby wildfire, Diedra Villeneuve and Derek Mckillop chose to stay to feed the pets residents had to leave behind.
“We are not leaving. We are going to make sure one way or another that these dogs get fed, get water. We are here to help them,” said Mckillop.
Speaking on Monday, Mckillop said the two had been driving around the village since 7:30am that day feeding animals they saw at homes or checking on pets for evacuated families.
Villeneuve said they were inspired to help after checking on her uncle’s dog.
“We went to town this morning just to go for a cruise and we noticed a couple of dogs, so we came back, got a little bit of dog food, and we went through that bag of dog food within 20 minutes,” said Mckillop.
When Cabin Radio spoke to them just after 12:30pm, Villeneuve said the pair had received between 15 and 20 requests to check on pets.
Mckillop said NorthMart had donated dog and cat food, and they had used at least three bags.
Noting that many residents who initially chose to stay were opting to leave as Monday wore on, Villeneuve said she and Mckillop would syat with the animals. If they needed to, Mckillop said, they would use a boat to leave the village.
“I have such a big heart for animals and for dogs. I would give my life for dogs,” said Mckillop.
