The City of Yellowknife now says a three-way stop at an intersection connecting into the Niven subdivision is only a temporary measure.
Earlier this week, the city said it was changing the layout of the intersection of Niven Drive/43 Street and 49 Avenue to “improve traffic flow and enhance access to local businesses in the downtown core.”

The city gave no indication that the measure was temporary, but residents in touch with Cabin Radio said they had been informed the three-way stop was not a permanent installation.
Asked about this, the city confirmed on Wednesday that three-way stop is “a temporary traffic measure implemented to improve traffic flow” while nearby construction takes place.
That construction is “currently expected to be completed in early September,” the city stated.
“Our goal is to complete this essential infrastructure work as safely and efficiently as possible while minimizing disruption to the public. Once this phase is complete, the temporary three-way stop is planned to be removed.”
When not a three-way stop, the intersection usually allows no entry into 49 Avenue and no left turn from 49 Avenue into 43 Street.
“The City will continue to monitor traffic conditions and make adjustments as needed to improve safety, accessibility, and traffic flow throughout the community,” this week’s original notice concluded.
