The new Jean Marie River Bridge on Highway 1 is now open to the public, the NWT government says.
The GNWT says the bridge opened on Wednesday, replacing an ageing crossing that had reached the end of its service life and required reduced speeds, single-lane traffic and frequent maintenance.
The new single-span steel girder bridge removes width restrictions for oversized loads, provides more clearance for higher flood levels, and is expected to improve safety and reliability for residents, commercial traffic, and visitors travelling along Highway 1, the territory stated.
Infrastructure minister Vince McKay called the bridge “an important investment” in the NWT’s transportation system.
Construction crews will remain on site over the next month. Drivers are asked to obey traffic signs and slow down while travelling through the work zone.
