Beth Cowan has been selected for the Yellowknife Artist-Run Community Centre’s new and unusual residency, set on an esker in the high Arctic.
The Esker Artist-in-Residence Program, announced in May, sends a northern artist to the Tundra Ecosystem Research Station on Daring Lake to explore “the interplay between art, science, and conservation,” a YKARCC news release stated.
Cowan, the inaugural artist in residency, is a Yellowknife visual artist with a background in Arctic geomorphology – the study of changing landscapes.
YKARCC said Cowan uses wood burning, relief printing, foraged ink and watercolours “as tools to study the textures and details of the natural environment.”

“She draws inspiration and experimentation from hikes, ski and canoe trips,” said YKARCC.
Cowan will take part in the residency at the research station, located on North America’s longest esker, from July 30 to August 9.
According to YKARCC, the 10 days will be “valuable time to retreat, reflect, and focus on their work alongside researchers and scientists.”
