An organization raising awareness for equitable sport access is hosting a free day of sports, games and community activities Saturday at Mildred Hall School.
Play It Forward Community Showcase & Sports Day is taking place on August 15 from 12pm to 4pm and is organized by Northwest Territories Equitable Sports Access.
The organization said the event is open to everyone, with the aim of bringing families, youth, and community members together through sport.
“Play It Forward is about making sport accessible and fun for everyone in Yellowknife,” said Korry Garvey, a Northwest Territories Equitable Sports Access board member, in a news release.
“We want to bring the whole community together for a day that celebrates sport, connection, and everything that makes Yellowknife special.”

Events include a three-on-three basketball tournament, mini soccer tournament and an obstacle course with a bouncy castle. There will also be face painting, a free barbecue, a raffle, and an activity passport challenge with prizes.
The organization is asking people to register for the basketball and mini soccer tournaments in advance, but said walk-ins would be accepted based on availability. There is no fee to participate in the tournaments.
The Yellowknife Skating Club, YK Galaxy Soccer, Bikespace, NWT Judo Association, Yellowknife Table Tennis Club, Yellowknife Community Foundation, 55+ Games Association, Yellowknife Bay Soccer, and Football NWT are set to participate in this year’s community showcase, Northwest Territories Equitable Sports Access said.
Started in 2024, Northwest Territories Equitable Sports Access supports NWT youth access to sport through mentorship or financial sponsorship like covering registration fees or donating equipment.
