The federal government announced Friday the NWT will receive $15 million to replace three ageing culverts along the Dempster Highway with the aim of making the highway “safer and more reliable.”
The culverts being replaced are at kilometres 40.1, 147 and 266.1, a news release said.
“Highway 8 is a critical transportation link that supports northern communities, businesses and the movement of essential goods and services,” Vince McKay, the NWT infrastructure minister, said in the news release.
“Replacing these ageing culverts will improve the safety and reliability of this important corridor while helping ensure it remains resilient for years to come.”
The federal government said the money comes from the rural and northern communities infrastructure stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.

The stream is intended to support projects that improve food security; road, air or marine infrastructure; internet connectivity; and education or health facilities, as well as increase access to more efficient or reliable energy sources, according to the program’s website.
