A contract for a 64-unit housing development in Yellowknife has been awarded to PCL Construction Management Inc, Housing NWT announced on Wednesday.
The new development, previously announced in February, will be built on the former Rockhill apartments site on 54 Avenue. It will include a mix of transitional and social housing units as well as a new early learning and childcare space.
The contract, worth $55 million, is funded by the territorial government and the federal government through the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s Affordable Housing Fund.
PCL Construction, which has its North American headquarters in Edmonton, says it operates in Canada, the United States and Australia.
According to its website, the company has been responsible for the construction of other buildings in Yellowknife, such as the Greenstone Building on 50 Avenue in 2006 and Watermark Tower on 52 Avenue in 2003.
“Through this partnership with PCL Construction, we are expanding access to transitional and social housing while investing in homes that will support residents and strengthen our communities for years to come,” housing minister Lucy Kuptana was quoted as saying in a Wednesday press release.
Construction is expected to begin this fall, the press release stated.
