Applications are now open for this year’s Field Law community fund program, with $20,000 available to support local projects in the Northwest Territories.
The program, which is open to residents within the territory and Alberta, supports causes run by charities, non-profits, and individuals working to improve their communities.
Although Field Law is open to any ideas “with a meaningful community impact,” preferred causes support education, healthcare, at-risk youth, homelessness, diversity, equality, women’s organizations, community and sports or arts and culture. Applicants do not need to be registered charities or non-profits to qualify.
A total of $80,000 is available through the 2026 program. Another $30,000 is available for projects in northern Alberta, while $30,000 is earmarked for southern Alberta.
Funding recipients will be selected through community online voting as well as a panel of judges. Applications are open until October 10.

“Every year, we’re reminded that some of the best ideas for strengthening a community come from the people living in it,” Farha Salim of Field Law was quoted as saying in a news release.
“These are the kinds of grassroots initiatives that don’t always have easy access to funding, but make a big difference in local communities. We can’t wait to see what charities, non-profits, and individuals bring forward in this fourteenth year of the program.”
According to the news release, the fund has provided $1 million to 184 community projects to date.
Last year, nine projects were selected in southern Alberta, four in northern Alberta and three in the NWT. The Hay River Community Garden Society received the grand prize of $15,000 last year, which helped it fund a new greenhouse. Northern Quill Publishing and NWT SPCA were the other territorial awardees.
