The NWT Arts Centre Initiative will welcome two artists on September 24 and 26 in a speaker series on the cultural, social and economic benefits of the arts.
Artists Aubyn O’Grady and Jackie Olson will speak about their creative practices and how the Yukon’s Dawson City became an “arts and culture hub” at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre on September 24 from 6:30-8pm.
On September 26, O’Grady and Olson will visit with local artists and art workers at Birchwood from 11am-3pm. A news release said there are eight 30-minute sessions available and registration is encouraged but not required.
O’Grady is described as an interdisciplinary artist whose art is focused on community engagement and collaboration. She is the program director and chair of the Yukon School of Visual Arts.
Olson is a citizen of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nation whose artistic practice is described as “working through processes of reclamation, witnessing and accompanying the regrowth of nature in the wake of miners’ destruction of the surface of the land.” She is a teacher at the Yukon School of Visual Arts.

The NWT Arts Centre Initiative plans to run the Creative Future speakers series from September 2026 to March 2027, which it said will feature Canadian and northern artists, curators and educators.
The initiative is more broadly working on a project to build a physical arts centre for the territory in Yellowknife.
