We want to hear your experiences of the NWT’s criminal justice system

Cabin Radio wants to hear from you as we put together a major new series on justice in Canada’s North.

Have you been a victim of a crime? Have you been accused or found guilty of a criminal offence? Have you spent time in a correctional facility? Have you had encounters with the police? Have you worked for the justice system?

Maybe you have experience with all the above.

If any of this sounds familiar and you live in the Northwest Territories, we want to hear from you – especially if you live in a small community outside the regional centres.

For 11 months, Cabin Radio has travelled across the NWT to report on proceedings of the territorial circuit court as part of a national investigative journalism fellowship.

While we spent time in about a dozen communities, we couldn’t visit everyone. This page is an opportunity for people we didn’t meet to have a say about the justice system in the North.

What should I say?

What you submit is up to you. We are interested in hearing about first-hand experiences rather than opinions that aren’t based on direct experience. Suggestions could include:

• details about times you have been involved in the justice system, and what the consequences were for you and your family;
• how the criminal justice system has affected your life, for better or for worse;
• what you have learned through your experience in the criminal justice system that you wish other people knew

What else do I need to know?

Note that we ask for a name and phone number. This allows our reporter to follow up and confirm details. However, we understand that individuals who have been in contact with the justice system may be vulnerable and we can provide anonymity when necessary. We will not publish any identifying details without your consent.

The deadline for submissions is October 21. Though we cannot guarantee every story will be included in the final project, all submissions will be reviewed.
