Boil-water advisory issued for Délı̨nę

The NWT’s chief environmental health officer is advising residents of Délı̨nę to boil their drinking water for at least one minute due to higher-than-normal turbidity, or muddy water.

The advisory is precautionary, and no illnesses associated with drinking water have been reported in the community, the GNWT stated on Monday afternoon.

The territory said residents should boil water before drinking it or using it to prepare food, beverages or ice, wash fruits and vegetables, brush their teeth, or prepare infant formula. Public drinking fountains should not be used.

Water does not need to be boiled for showering, bathing or laundry, but residents should avoid swallowing it.

Bottled water can be used instead. Water treated through distillation, reverse osmosis, or filter rated at one micron absolute or less is also considered an alternative.

The advisory notes that Brita-style activated carbon filters are not safe to use during the advisory as they do not disinfect water.

The GNWT said the chief environmental health officer and Délı̨nę’s community government will continue to monitor the situation and provide notice when the advisory is lifted.
