The NWT’s coroner service on Thursday published the identity of the person whose body was discovered in a wooded area near Yellowknife’s Taylor Road a day earlier.

Staff from the coroner service and RCMP had recovered the body shortly before noon on Wednesday after a report from a member of the public earlier that morning.

“Mr Tyler Mitchell, 34, of Yellowknife has been identified,” the territory’s coroner service said in a brief statement published on Thursday.

What happened to Tyler is not yet clear. Procedurally, the coroner service publicly identifies those who have passed away only once family have been notified.

“The coroner service has ordered a post-mortem examination. The investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the RCMP,” the statement read.

“The coroner service extends sincere condolences to the family and friends of Tyler Mitchell.”
