Aurora Village lost outbuilding but ‘fully operational’ after fire

Yellowknife-area tour operator Aurora Village says a Saturday fire destroyed a “small maintenance structure” but otherwise left its facilities undamaged.

On the day, NWT Fire said air tankers and crews made rapid progress to halt a small fire near Aurora Village, which is based about 20 km northeast of Yellowknife near a small collection of homes named Cassidy Point.

In a Tuesday news release, Aurora Village thanked municipal and territorial firefighters and said nobody had been hurt.

The cause of the fire remains unclear. In its statement, Aurora Village did not allude to how the fire might have started.

“There was no damage to any guest-facing facility or tourism infrastructure,” the statement read. “Operations at Aurora Village will continue as normal once the season opens on August 12, and visitors can be assured that all tourism facilities remain safe and fully operational.”

Aurora Village owner Don Morin said fire crews’ swift response “prevented the fire from spreading and protected the facilities that welcome guests from around the world.”
