Garett Cochrane says his commitment to Yellowknife will not waver after losing Monday’s mayoral race to Melissa Syer.
Cochrane, a Métis and 2SLGBTQ+ Yellowknifer, was first elected to city council in 2022 and served as deputy mayor. He was also among the councillors who sought to replace Rebecca Alty as mayor when she left to become the NWT’s MP last year, though council colleagues ultimately chose Ben Hendriksen for the role.
Speaking at Yellowknife’s Elks Lodge on election night, surrounded by friends, family and council candidates, Cochrane congratulated Syer and thanked his supporters.
In an interview with Cabin Radio, he said conversations with residents were a highlight of the campaign, bringing attention to issues ranging from the cost of living to downtown revitalization.
Cochrane urged the incoming mayor and council to consider the city’s defence spending plan and how municipal spending can best address affordability.
“This election may be over, but the work does not end tonight,” Cochrane said in a concession speech, calling on residents to stay engaged and work together.
He thanked his family, campaign team and volunteers for their efforts to build a stronger, more inclusive community.
Despite the loss, Cochrane said he was proud of the campaign and grateful to everyone who placed their trust in him.
