Aurora College says its staff, research associates and students can now apply for funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

The college says it has been eligible since 2014 for funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council. CIHR was recently added to the list.

Those three agencies are the primary way the federal government supports research and training at post-secondary level.

Aurora College said in a news release that having access to CIHR funding means it is “better positioned to collaborate with health authorities, community organizations, and other post-secondary institutions on large-scale health studies that can have real-world benefits for northerners.”

“Research led by Aurora College can be tailored to the specific geographical and cultural context of the Northwest Territories, ensuring that health solutions are developed in the North, for the North,” college interim president Nora Houlahan was quoted as saying.

The CIHR website states it supports research in 13 areas like ageing, the health of Indigenous peoples, and mental health and addiction. CIHR states it invests about $1 billion annually.

In 2025-26, the agency invested $2.6 million in the NWT and there were five new or ongoing funding applications.
