In honour of World Judo Day, the NWT Judo Association is inviting women and non-binary people in Yellowknife to a free judo class on Wednesday, October 28 from 7-8pm at the Quality Inn.

Whitney Weaver, who started judo aged 13 while attending the city’s William McDonald School, said practices are open to anyone but the Wednesday class is specifically designed for newcomers.

“We want people to realize that strength comes in many shapes and forms, and judo is not particularly aimed at one body type,” said Weaver.

Weaver is the association’s treasurer, a black belt and coach for the girls’ judo program. She and Chantal Steitzer will teach the class on Wednesday.

“We don’t care what your athletic ability is. We just want you to come and try the sport out,” said Weaver.

“Judo is a lot of work and a lot of discipline but, at the same time, it’s a very fun sport.”

The class is open to people aged 18 or older. No registration is required and no specific equipment is needed, but Weaver encourages people to wear gym clothes.
