In a last-minute turn of events, the Mackenzie Place highrise building in Hay River will now not be sold at auction on Thursday morning.

The building was placed for sale at $1.45 million in a tax auction, which consists of a public auction of properties in arrears. The building’s owner was said to owe about $170,000 in property taxes to the municipality.

The Town of Hay River on Wednesday said the highrise was no longer among the properties available at the auction.

In a Facebook post, the town said “multiple registrations against the property have been identified of which the town’s legal representative will need to provide appropriate notice of the intent to auction.”

“An auction for the property will be scheduled at a future date to be determined,” the statement continued.

Approached for clarification, town senior administrator Glenn Smith said by email: “As tied to legal proceedings I would like to limit our comments to those already provided.”

There have been many issues with the building after a fire in 2019 left it uninhabitable and displaced about 100 people.

As of 1pm on Wednesday, there were still six other properties on the list for Thursday’s auction.
