Aurora College won’t start its fall semester until October 3 because of the wildfire crisis affecting multiple NWT communities.
The semester had been due to begin on August 28.
Fort Smith, which was evacuated on Sunday, is the college’s headquarters. Four other communities are currently under evacuation orders.
The decision, shared to Facebook on Monday, delays the start of the semester until October 3 for all of the college’s campuses and community learning centres across the territory.
“In the meantime, we ask that all Aurora College students delay relocation to all of our campuses until closer to the start of classes, to allow emergency personnel and affected communities the time needed to deal with any impacts,” the college wrote.
The college said its communications systems are down because of the widespread outage affecting the South Slave, so it will use Facebook to share information.
“We will also be trying to connect with students via personal emails or phone,” the college stated.
