The Gwich’in Tribal Council says it is in the first phase of a $51.5-million project to build houses in all four Gwich’in communities.
The plan involves constructing 20 houses in 2024 – eight in Fort McPherson, six in Inuvik and three each in Tsiigehtchic and Aklavik.
A spokesperson for the GTC said community development planning began in April last year with a series of engagement sessions. A second session followed in July and another is happening next week.
The plans created will identify the number of homes required in each community “as well as other infrastructure needs,” the tribal council stated.
“We anticipate the total need for housing will be over 130 new homes in the GSA communities.”
Funding for the project comes from the federal government.
The tribal council said the vision for Inuvik homes includes a “mix of market housing homes for Gwich’in participants and community needs, such as for employers and employees of the GTC and the Gwich’in Development Corporation.”
The spokesperson added: “This vision would help to directly address the housing crisis in the region that we currently face. This is not a social housing initiative but, as we move forward, it will likely alleviate the current waitlist for social housing in the community.”
