Five duplexes that will provide 10 new homes in Ulukhaktok are being prepared for residents after reaching the community by barge late last month.

In a news release, Housing NWT said the homes – described as “single-occupant social housing” – will be ready later this fall.

There are 94 existing social housing units in Ulukhaktok, which has a population of about 460, the territory’s housing agency said earlier this summer.

The five duplexes left Hay River by barge on July 6 and arrived on August 28, slightly later than planned.

They are part of a broader project to provide 98 units for singles to nine NWT communities by the spring of 2028. The other eight are Behchokǫ̀, Délı̨nę, Fort Providence, Fort Simpson, Fort Smith, Inuvik, Tuktoyaktuk and Tulita.

Communities were selected “based on where there is a demonstrated need for singles housing,” Housing NWT said.
